Towards thinking society

With the changing face of the academic community, it is said that the number of people attending university has expanded so much that a university graduate can no longer necessarily be considered an “intellectual”.

University students’ average scholastic ability and sense of social responsibility have declined dramatically as more and more students are admitted.

This state of affaires requires Japan to implement a drastic review of higher education.

Education that stresses philosophy—education that refines the human qualities found in a thinking society (which differs from a merely educated society)—must be our goal.

Education policy cannot be simply a subset of science and technology, and philosophy teachers must be awakened to the importance of “true” philosophy.
